This illustration shows an example of PWM dimming. The LED intensity is linearly dependent on the PWM duty cycle because the duty cycle determines the average current. This page shows how reducing the PMW duty cycle (varying the pulse width) reduces the average current and thus the brightness of the emitted light. When implementing PWM dimming, the PWM frequency should be more than 100 Hz as this will prevent the human eye from detecting any flickering or blinking of the light.
