LED-Driver-Slide11
Most linear LED drivers use a fixed voltage source and regulate the loop containing the LEDs. This places the LED deep into the saturation region to ensure operation of all LEDs and to provide enough headroom for the changing characteristics of the system. This is not power efficient as the optimal position is at the edge of the saturation region as shown on the page. The Microchip technique detects the most dominant LED string and adjusts the voltage so this string is at the start of its saturation region. This increases the overall power efficiency of the system as no headroom is needed. Microchip has patented this adaptive technique.
