In high voltage environments, electrical isolation from the communication bus to logic controllers is regularly employed for human safety and equipment protection. One benefit often overlooked in circuit isolation is its effect on circuit performance, rather than simply protecting it from dangerous voltages. These benefits come in the form of uninterrupted, error-free communication in the presence of harsh ground bounce and other system level noise that would otherwise render a non-isolated system inoperative. Repetitive ground and signal disturbances can originate from coupling to 60Hz AC power lines routed adjacent to RS485 bus wires, or 60Hz current may be conducted into shared ground or supply lines.
