Historical stand alone metering applications, primarily using 8- and 16-bit microcontrollers, have evolved to what is today a smart grid. Connected meters are the keystone of this smart grid. To support the increasing levels of connectivity and smart grid functionality, increased processor throughput and larger memories are required, driving the need for 32-bit based microcontrollers.
