The realm of commercial high-isolation DC-DC converters has historically consisted largely of unregulated devices. The development of regulated converters has been hindered by the size and cost of signal isolators necessary to convey the feedback signal for regulation across the isolation barrier, since the signal isolator itself must have the same or greater isolation as the power transformer. The minimum size is limited by creepage and clearance distances of several millimeters required to maintain a high isolation boundary. As a consequence, engineers using unregulated converters but requiring a regulated voltage on the secondary side would have to add post-regulators that increase the cost and size of the solution while geometrically decreasing efficiency with the cascaded conversions. Using the latest component technologies, Murata Power Solutions’ is now able to offer customers a complete series of fully regulated solutions in the NCM6 product that are both cost and space-effective. The 5.2 kV isolation rating is a key element in providing solutions that can serve medical equipment applications. The 4:1 input operating range is also a key feature for medical equipment designed to operate from battery sources for portability and/or continuing critical service through utility power outages. This provides the framework for the development and intended market for the NCM6 of Industrial and Medical applications.
