Here is a closer look at the MOSFET Selection Tool that was mentioned earlier. The MOSFET selector provides MOSFET recommendations based on the BOM. It also allows custom selection of an alternate MOSFET from a database of FETs. The electrical simulation tool can then simulate how the MOSFETs and the system will behave under different electrical conditions. Thermal simulation is especially beneficial to controller designs because the temperature rise of the MOSFETs can get large very quickly depending on the design specifications. This provides an opportunity to evaluate these thermal losses and have a better idea as to how the board should be laid out. Lastly, with the new “charts” feature, evaluation of many other aspects of the design over the full range of operating conditions can be simulated.
