However, the original 3-terminal regulator and the higher current regulators that followed had two main modern-day shortcomings. First, they were unable to adjust the output voltage below 1.2V. New high performance digital circuits require voltages below 1.2V and there is no reason to believe that these voltages will not continue to go down. Even the newer generations of low dropout regulators such as the LT1086 are limited to 1.2V. The second main shortcoming is that they are not optimized for surface-mounted systems. Surface mount components and high density boards preclude the use of heat sinks with older linear regulators which limits their output current.
