MSP430 for Utility Metering Solutions Slide 7

With all those things happening in a smart meter, a microprocessor may have to handle many things. As can be seen in this slide, on the right-hand side is the functional block diagram which shows an application processor in the center and also the various items the processor may be required to handle for a good smart meter application. One example is metrology which could be a one, two or three-phase energy measurement. There could also be an out-of phase home area network for inside the home, or a wide area network for outside the home, power line communication, or an internet connection. The smart meter will feature some type of a display, and it may also have WiFi for a cell phone network, or within the home and talking to the substations. A system block diagram is shown on the left-hand side. It can be seen that there are many silicon components in the smart meter. This presentation will be concerned with the top two blue blocks, featuring the TI MSP430 MCU.
