Girls Who Code 2019 Held at Lincoln High School

The Girls Who Code kickoff meet-up was held on Wednesday, January 16th in the Media Center at Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls. It is NOT too late to join! The club is open to 6th-12th grade girls and meetings will be held every Wednesday from now until the end of the school year from 3:30 to 4:30pm.

What is Girls Who Code? It is a non-profit group whose main mission is to close the gender gap in technology. Currently fewer than 1 in 5 Computer Science graduates are female. Technology programs across the board are male dominated. Why is this? What is discouraging girls from pursuing these fields? Albeit there may be many reasons, I would say a major factor comes down to the male dominance being intimidating, which only further widens the gap.

This club provides a female dominated space for girls to work together, help inspire each other, and gain knowledge from one another. Having been the only female in my college courses, I know how intimidating it can be at times. This club takes away that intimidation and will hopefully provide a level of comfort that will encourage more to join.

Please let the young females in your life know about this great opportunity and encourage them to join. Even if they have ZERO experience or exposure to programming, they can attend a meeting and see if it’s for them. There will be snacks, fun, and a lot to gain along the way.
