Analog Devices uses the following terms in this presentation: Switching Regulator - a switching regulator or PWM regulator that includes on-board MOSFETs; Switching Controller - a controller for a switching regulator that requires external MOSFETs; Point-Of-Load (POL) - a regulator or controller located directly next to the load, as opposed to being many centimeters (or further) away for a standard power supply. Additonally, the words regulator and converter are used interchangeably and describe the same thing. For example, a switching regulator is also called a switching converter.
