As shown in the IR receiver block diagram, the infrared light signal generates a current in the photo diode. The AC portion of this signal is then passed to a transimpedance amplifier with an automatic gain control circuit followed by a band pass filter. Next the signal is conditioned and demodulated with a comparator, integrator, and Schmitt trigger. The final step is the output circuit which is an open collector transistor with an internal pull-up resistor.
