There are several reasons to use LEDs. The first reason is the significantly higher efficiency of LEDs compared to other lighting technologies. The second reason is the very long lifetime of LEDs. Looking at a comparison of the different lighting technologies in today’s market it can seen that LEDs offer significant advantages. One of the oldest lighting technologies is the incandescent lamp which has a lifetime of around one thousand hours and an efficiency of 17 lumens per watt. Another lighting source is the halogen lamp. They last around four thousand hours and have an efficiency between 15 to 25 lumens per watt. They are more expensive than incandescent lamps but offer better efficiency and lifetime. Compact fluorescent lights offer ten thousand hours of lifetime and an increased efficiency of 50 to 70 lumens per watt. CFLs have long lifetime and good efficiency but use toxic components such as mercury. Finally, LED lights outperform all of the other technologies, offering a lifetime of over 50,000 hours and efficiencies of 75 to 100 lumens per watt.
