Users expect reliable and repeatable transactions before they will build confidence in any payment system. While NFC only requires proximity of devices to each other or to a point of sale terminal, alignment of the two devices is important and directly effects the user’s experience. Moreso when the NFC field strength varies, due to battery charge state; orientation of the NFC antenna in both the send and receive devices; and the size of the antenna itself. Future handsets are likely to be smaller or of different styling, which compromises the NFC antenna size and location on the back of the handset’s case. It is common practice today to incorporate the NFC antenna coil within the battery, further limiting the available signal strength for a given transmitter power.
