Spread spectrum may not always be used to reduce EMI in a system design. Certain applications such as MPEG and Ethernet cannot tolerate a spread clock because of the tight ppm requirements. Clock specifications of the destination chips in the design should be checked to determine what type of spread (if any) can be used. Lastly, downstream PLLs and whether those PLLs are input spread tolerant or not should be considered.
