There are several questions to consider to help determine if a low inductance MLCC is needed in an application. What is the speed or clock frequency of the system? If it is around 300 MHz or higher, a low inductance capacitor is needed. What are the peak power demands for the largest IC in the design? If they are greater than or equal to 5W, a low inductance capacitor should be considered. What are the operating voltages of the bigger ICs in the design? If they are around 1.2V, this means that a drop in voltage of only 0.15V will violate a +/- 10% input voltage for the IC. A low inductance capacitor should also be considered in this case to keep the voltage constant during times of heavy current draw.
