MP2658 36 V Standalone Switching Charger

The MPS MP2658 compact versatile switching charger is ideal for portable applications utilizing a range of battery chemistries. It supports battery packs of up to seven Li-ion, Li-polymer, or LiFePO4 cells in series. It is also compatible with lead-acid, supercapacitors, NiMH, and NiCd batteries across a voltage range of 2 V to 31 V. The device delivers up to 3 A of charging current (I_CC), regardless of the battery regulation voltage (V_{BATT_REG}).

Designed to handle up to 36 V_DC input and withstand a hold-off voltage of up to 45 V, the MP2658 charges batteries in four sequential stages: trickle charge, pre-charge, constant current (CC), and constant voltage (CV).

Users can configure the MP2658's transition thresholds from pre-charge to fast charge and its charge termination behavior through external pin settings. This flexibility makes it suitable for charging both supercapacitors and a variety of battery types.

Charging management is governed by input current (I_IN) and input voltage (V_IN). If I_IN surpasses its preset threshold or V_IN drops to its lower limit, the MP2658 dynamically reduces the charging current to safeguard the input power source from being overloaded.

For enhanced safety, the MP2658 integrates multiple protection mechanisms, including overvoltage protection (OVP) for the battery, temperature monitoring and safeguards, thermal shutdown, and a programmable charging safety timer. The MP2658 is offered in a compact 3 mm x 3 mm QFN-19 package.
