BMR462 Digital DC/DC PoL Regulators

Flex Power Modules' BMR462 series digital point-of-load (PoL) regulators are offered in a compact 21.0 mm x 12.7 mm x 8.2 mm package, fitting easily into systems with 15 mm board pitch. They offer a V_OUT range between 0.6 V to 5.0 V and a wide V_IN range from 4.5 V to 14 V. These converters can deliver up to 12 A with efficiencies up to 97.1% at 5 V_IN, 3.3 V_OUT, and 50% load. They are available for both horizontal-mount (both SMD and PTH) and vertical-mount (SIP) orientations.

Flex Power Modules' BMR462 product family offers an exceptionally wide range of control and monitoring functions. Designers can configure the power systems to dynamically minimize energy consumption under all load conditions. This simplifies thermal management requirements and reduces CO₂ emissions.

The BMR462's synchronization capability means that multiple regulators can be locked to a common switching frequency. This eliminates beat frequencies that can be reflected to the input, reduces EMI filtering requirements, and minimizes the external component count. Input capacitance requirements, and hence losses, are reduced by spreading the peak current drawn from the input supply over the complete switching cycle. Adaptive diode emulation turns off the low-side MOSFET gate drive in the synchronous rectification circuit at low load currents. This gives a further boost to efficiency by eliminating losses that would occur if the circuit's inductor current were permitted to go negative.

The BMR462 features integral signaling for remote control, voltage tracking, voltage margining, and remote sense. The voltage setting is achieved using pin strapping or via the PMBus and the device has comprehensive circuit protection built-in.

The BMR462 is supported by the Flex Power designer tool and has an MTBF rating of up to 21 million hours. Evaluation of the BMR462 SIP modules can be performed using the ROA1285068 evaluation board, while for the horizontal mount versions use the ROA1283836 evaluation board.
